BHUBANESWAR: With the state recording four Omicron cases so far, the government has planned to modify its existing health infrastructure to segregate patients infected by the Delta and Omicron strains of Covid-19.
Instead of augmenting the infrastructure, the healthcare authorities have decided to keep separate isolation wards within a designated Covid hospital.
“Given that the modalities of treatment remain the same, there won’t be any need to change the hospital set-up, bring in more expertise, change the line of treatment or increase the number of general and ICU beds. The virus, so far, has been found to behave in a manner similar to the dominant Delta variant. However, it has a higher transmissibility than Delta. So we have kept separate wards within the same hospital. Our priority will be to stop further transmission. The hospital infrastructure is optimum for the current scenario and the possible future situation,” Bijay Mohapatra, director of health services, said.
He added that of the four Omicron patients detected so far, three are doing well with just mild symptoms.
The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) here is currently carrying out the genome study of three more samples, which tested positive for Covid, and the results of which are expected on Saturday.
At present, the bed occupancy in Covid hospitals is just 8% of the available strength. There are only 18 patients in the general wards of the different Covid hospitals, while the ICU and high-dependency units together have 111 patients. As many as 14 patients are on ventilator support.
The government has reported that 1,501 patients are in home isolation. In the paediatric general ward, there are three patients. No paediatric patient is in ICU or on ventilator support.
The capital city has designated a guest house as Omicron isolation facility having 100 beds.
The state on Friday added 141 new Covid infections. With 172 new recoveries, the active cases were down to 1,751.
