Odisha: Suspension of driving licence low for violators

Data shows the DL suspension towards over-speeding violation was 10.94% between January and September this year.

BHUBANESWAR: Though the rule prescribes immediate suspension of the driving licence (DL) of the violators of traffic rules, its implementation has been abysmally poor in the state. Statistics of the transport department said the DLs of only 5% to 22% of the total violators were suspended this year.
The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety had on August 18, 2015 directed all states to suspend DLs for three months towards five major offences – overspeeding, overloading in goods carriages, drink driving, using mobile phone while driving and riding two-wheelers without helmet.
Data shows the DL suspension towards over-speeding violation was 10.94% between January and September this year. The suspension of DL towards violation of use of mobile phone while driving was 20.45%, towards drunken driving 22.61% and towards helmetless driving 5.82%.
The Supreme Court committee expressed strong displeasure over the poor enforcement of the DL suspensions. “We have asked the district collectors, regional transport officers and superintendents of police to improve the enforcement of DL suspensions,” transport minister Padmanabh Behera said.
The transport department said the RTOs have been asked to impart road safety and first-aid training to the DL aspirants. Prior to the DL test, the training on road safety and first aid will be given to the applicants, Behera said.
For detection of traffic rule violations like over-speeding and wrong-side driving, a CCTV camera surveillance system is being implemented along Jankia-Chhatia stretch in the state. Collectors in Sundargarh and Keonjhar have initiated a process for implementation of CCTV camera surveillance in their districts.
